| The study of metaphor was first introduced as a term in rhetoric and has been developed for more than 2,000 years.In 1980,Lakoff and Johnson’s work Metaphors We Lived by marks the beginning of metaphor research from the cognitive perspective.Most of the conceptual metaphor translation research focuses on literature and politics.Meanwhile,previous studies on conceptual metaphors in sports news mostly focused on WAR metaphors.This study focuses on the translation strategies of conceptual metaphors in English sports news of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.This paper seeks to answer these two research questions:1)What are the major types of conceptual metaphors in the English sports news of the Beijing 2022 Games?And what is the proportion of each type?2)What are the translation strategies of these conceptual metaphors?The research takes the sports news of the Beijing 2022 Games as the material;and collects 35 pieces of English sports news and their Chinese translations.The study takes the conceptual metaphor theory as the theoretical framework and adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.Based on the MIP method,this study identifies the conceptual metaphors and classifies them into WAR,JOURNEY,CONTAINER,DRAMA,UP-DOWN,HUMAN,NATURE,DREAM,and PLANT metaphors.With the help of the resonance value of the source domain.The research finds that WAR and JOURNEY metaphors account for the most,45.16%and 29.19%,while DREAM and PLANT metaphors the least,0.13%and 0.06%respectively.Six translation methods are adopted,namely,retaining,paraphrasing,substitution,deletion,supplementing,and similes for metaphors.This study hopes to help readers deepen their understanding of conceptual metaphors in sports news and to provide some reference for translators and student translators in their translation of sports news. |
