| In view of the current situation in the children’s book industry,the introduction of books from foreign countries could provide a reference for the domestic translation studies and practice on this field.The paper reports the English-Chinese translation of a historical text written for children from six to ten History in a Hurry-Ancient China,which gives a brief introduction to the history of the ancient China in a humorous and playful manner.The paper mainly adopts strategies of explicitation to deal with the difficult points encountered in the translation process.Most of difficulties are caused by the existence of information that remains implicit and needs further clarification in the translation for the sake of target readers.By connecting strategies of explicitation with the translation of children’s books,the author divides difficulties encountered in the translation process from the following four aspects,semantic elements,logical flow,cultural information and linguistic style.For the semantic elements,the author focuses efforts on explaining the expressions that are not commonly used,or not clear nor clarified.In terms of the logical flow,strategies are adopted to conform to the expression logic of the target language so as to realize a complete and idiomatic sentence.With regard to the cultural information,different strategies are used to deal with different kinds of cultural terms in the text.As for the linguistic style,strategies are used to highlight the playful and childlike rhetorical style of the source text This report has selected typical examples from the translation material and analyzed the application of strategies of explicitation in those examples from the above-mentioned aspects.The report has employed the strategies of explicitation to achieve a more lucid,idiomatic and interesting translation,which not only provides a new research perspective on the translation of children literature and thus contributes to future translation practice and studies on children’s books,but also expands the scope of the application of explicitation.It should also be noted that translators need to avoid over-explicitation when adopting strategies of explicitation in the translation process.It is necessary to conduct further researches on how to avoid explicitation that leads to overtranslation. |
