Wang Anyi is one of the most representative female writers of contemporary China and has a wide international influence. At present, there are 24 published Japanese translations of Wang Anyi’s works,as well as over 40 essays and literary criticism on Wang Anyi’s works written by more than ten Japanese scholars, led by Matsumura Shino,Osamu Kamaya and Yoshiko Sugie. In this context, this paper focuses on the reception of Wang Anyi’s works by readers in China and Japan, and divides the study into an elite group of readers represented by scholars and a mass group of readers represented by ordinary readers,to look at the differences in the reception of the works by readers in the two countries as a whole.Based on the theoretical foundation of reception aesthetics, this paper uses textual analysis, empirical research, and comparative analysis as research methods to investigate how readers in China and Japan rely on their cultural backgrounds, ways of thinking, knowledge levels and life experiences to understand the works and to make individualized acceptances of the works. This article focuses on the differences in the reception, attitudes, and effects of Chinese and Japanese readers, and explores the influence of social, political, cultural and poetic factors on the reception of Chinese and Japanese readers,to further grasp the value orientation and aesthetic interests of readers in both countries,to provide some reference on how to promote contemporary Chinese literature more effectively. The text is divided into four chapters. The first chapter provides a brief introduction to Wang Anyi and her works.Through an understanding of her career, creative history and representative works,it is possible to deepen one’s knowledge of her works and to examine in more detail the differences in the reception of her works by Chinese and Japanese readers. The second chapter compares and summarises the translation of Wang Anyi’s works in Japan. For overseas readers, translation is a prerequisite for acceptance, and the publication of Japanese translations and the specialization of the main body of translators have laid the foundation for acceptance by Japanese readers, creating an objective environment for acceptance. The third chapter focuses on the differences in the reception of Wang Anyi’s works by Chinese and Japanese scholars.Through a case-by-case analysis and a generalization of the overall situation, this chapter examines three different aspects of research on the ontology of the work, research perspectives, and theoretical approaches,to understand the creative reception and transformation of Wang Anyi’s works by scholars in both countries and to analyze certain characteristics and factors of their reception.Chapter 4 focuses on the reception of Wang Anyi’s works by general readers in China and Japan.Firstly,it analyses readers’ awareness of Wang Anyi’s works in both countries from the perspective of the objective reception environment, and on this premise,it further explores the extent and effectiveness of the reception of readers in both countries with the help of readers’ book reviews.
