| This translation report chooses the chapter 1 to chapter 3 of The Glorious Pool, which is a fiction published in 1934 and written by American writer Thorne Smith. In this book, the author uses many dialogues and psychological descriptions and other descriptive contents with vivid language and unique characteristics of English. In order to reproduce these features and styles in the translation process, the translator chooses Catford’s translation shift theory as a guidance and adopts corresponding translation strategies.Catford put forward the concept of translation shift in 1965,which,from a more detailed and in-depth linguistic perspective, provides a detailed guidance on the translator’s translation process.Based on the theory, this report analyzes the typical cases in chapter 1-3 based on level shifts and category shifts. In some cases, the translator compares the original translation with the revised vision and illustrate why adopts the corresponding translation strategies. In terms of level shifts, translation shifts mainly occur between English grammar and Chinese vocabulary, such as tense in English and common expression to show time so as to achieve the corresponding content and avoid total equivalence of form.On the category shifts, three types are analyzed, that are class shifts, unit shifts and structure shifts.Class shifts,or shifts of part of speech, are the shifts happening between different part of speech.Different language units, mainly words, phrases and sentences, are often applied unit shifts.Structural shifts take place in the structure of language. For example, when the passive voice is converted into the active voice, the sentence structure also changes accordingly.Since this translation material is a literary novel,it is necessary for the translator to analyze translation examples and use translation theories flexibly to make the translation convey the meaning and find more natural equivalence in the target language to improve the reader’s acceptance. And through solving the problems in the translation process,it will provide guidance and suggestion for future novel translation, and improve translation practitioners’ understanding of Catford’s translation shift theory.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 30... |
