| Jane Austen is one of the greatest female writers in the history of British literature. She has created six wonderful novels in her life, among which Sense and Sensibility is a representative one.Austen, with her unique insight of women, depicts the world around her, especially the marriage and love between gentlemen and ladies. Her writing style is light and humorous, full of comedy conflict, giving readers a fresh feeling. As an interdisciplinary study,it is a combination of the pragmatic theory and a comparative study of translation. The purpose is to use Leech’s Politeness Principle including Tact Maxim,Generosity Maxim,Approbation Maxim,Modesty Maxim,Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim to help analyze the source text and the two translated versions of Sense and Sensibility. The pragmatic analysis provides a rather new way of thinking for the study on Sense and Sensibility.During the study, the methods of literature and qualitative are adopted to make a pragmatic analysis of the source text and two translated versions, and a comparative analysis of two Chinese translations to draw the final conclusion. It is found that the two Chinese versions both have followed the six maxims of Politeness Principle.Sun Zhili’s translation is more close to the source text, and the translation processing is more appropriate and flexible, while Wang Jiqing’s translation has some problems such as wrong translation or over translation. Therefore, the understanding of the source text is very important for English-Chinese translation, and the authentic expression is also indispensable. It is also proved that pragmatics theory is helpful for the comparative study of translation and helps the translator better understand the source text and choose appropriate translation method,so as to achieve better translation effect.Figure 0;Table 4;Reference 54... |
