An abstract is an obligatory part in Chinese and English academic research articles. The contents of abstracts provide the reader with the worthiness of reading the article. In recent years, more and more scholars at home and abroad focused on the study of abstracts and abstracts writing. However, most researchers addressed the similarities and differences of the abstracts from an interdisciplinary perspective and focused on the linguistic features and chunks.Few of them paid attention to the abstracts in the discipline of Applied Linguistics and conducted cross-linguistic studies on the move structures. Therefore,it is crucial to conduct a comparative study on the move structures of Chinese and English Applied Linguistics journal abstracts.Based on the five-move model proposed by Hyland(2000),this study adopted the genre analysis method to identify and compare move structures in Chinese and English abstracts, and to explore the potential causes of these similarities and differences. In this study, the top three Chinese and international core journals of Applied Linguistics were selected, and the publication time was set from 2014 to 2019.From these articles,60 abstracts in Chinese and 60 abstracts in English were randomly selected, and a Chinese abstract corpus and an English abstract corpus were built respectively.Based on the five-move model, moves in two corpora were identified and coded. The results show that most Chinese abstracts are presented in the 3 moves structure of“Method-Product-Conclusion”.Due to the limitation of Chinese journals on the number of words in abstracts,Chinese researchers often omit “the Introduction move” and “the Purpose move”.English abstracts are more inclined to adopt the “4 moves structure” or “5 moves structure” to form an explicit abstract.Additionally, there are four unconventional move structures in both corpora: move reversal, move repetition, move cycle and move combination. In Chinese corpus, the frequency of each move varies. The frequency of “the Method move” and “the Product move” is high.In the English abstract, the frequency of each move is more balanced. The results are of certain value to the teaching and writing.Figure 3;Table 16;Reference 85... |
