A Study Of Toper’s Translation Thoughts

The 21 st century is the century of translation.Translation has never been so important in human life and social culture as it is today.For hundreds of years,scholars from various countries have been arguing about translation issues,but they have never reached an agreement,this is mainly because they have focused too much on the opposition between "linguistic factors" and "superlinguistic factors" in translation,and have failed to break out of the inherent static research.In view of the "dynamic" feature of translation and the irreplaceability of artistic translation in translation activities,Toper creatively connects comparative literature with translation,trying to explore the essence of translation and the best way to solve translation problems in interlanguage literary communication.This thesis takes Toper’s translation thoughts as the research object,analyzes the possibility and necessity of translation studies from the perspective of comparative literature by studying his monograph Translation in the System of Comparative Literature,observes the formation of artistic translation theory,combs Toper’s translation theory system,and condense his unique viewpoints,in order to make contributions to the translation theory research.This thesis summarizes Toper’s view of artistic translation,translated literature and artistic translation criticism from the perspective of comparative literature.By discussing the concepts of comparative literature and summarizing Toper’s basic translation cognition,this thesis explains the basis for applying comparative literature to translation studies.Artistic translation is the field where comparative literature and translation studies are most closely linked.This thesis further clarifies Toper’s understanding of the definition and creative attributes of artisitic translation,expounds his position on controversial issues in this field,and studies its producttranslated literature,analyzes its essence,attribution and classical construction conditions,and prove that the introduction of comparative literature perspectives is of great significance to translation studies.Finally,by interpreting Toper’s understanding of the nature of artistic translation criticism and its standards and methods,analyzing his practice of artistic translation criticism,supplements his translation thoughts,and accomplishes the organic combination of translation theory and translation practice.The process of studying Toper’s translation thoughts is a process of reflection on existing translation theories.His series of translation thoughts from the perspective of comparative literature can greatly fill the gaps in current academic research and are of great significance to enriching the translation theories in China and other countries.
