Textbooks are irreplaceable in the process of English teaching and learning.How to study English textbooks and how to analyse the educational elements deeply are very significant for the students’ growth,which also manifests the standard of teachers’ professionality and humanity education.Textbooks are the basic medium for teaching and educating students in schools,and the quantity of educational elements contained in the textbooks also influences the students’ growth.Junior high school students’ outlooks of life,value and world have not been formed,and even many ideas of the students in this period are still in the stage of confusion and doubt.At this stage,if the teachers give students timely education and grasp the critical period of education,the students will get twofold results with half the effort.As Chinese citizens,Ideological and political education is very significant.Our students should be taught from an early age to be this kind of citizens who should love our motherland,love the people,love the socialism,learn how to behave,learn how to do things,learn how to be with themselves,and learn to adapt to the social development.Textbooks editors should add much more ideological and political things to the textbooks of English in junior high school.It is also English teachers’ duties to analyse the educational elements to teach students.Based on the four modes of moral education,the theory of symbiosis education and the value orientation of China’s ideological and political education,this dissertation aims to study the following issues:(1).In the PEP textbooks of English,what are the ingredients about education of ideologies and politics?(2).Is the distribution of ideological and political education elements in all grades balanced?(3).How do the teachers design activities to train students’ character by using the ingredients of ideologies and politics in the class?According to the unit,the author analyses dialogues and reading articles in the junior high school English textbooks of PEP edition detailedly,thus excavating all the ideological and political elements contained in the five textbooks.According to the four dimensions of ideological quality performance: political attitude,ideological performance,moral quality and living habits,the author catalogues all the political and ideological elements,then calculating proportion of them.At last,the author concludes that four dimensions of ideological quality performance in the textbooks are unbalanced,especially political attitude and moral quality accounting for less.Therefore,the author hopes that the textbooks editors should pay more attention to the topics of political attitude and moral quality in the following textbooks revision so as to train the students to be the ones having high degree of political consciousness,to be the ones having both morality and talent,to be excellent successors of socialism.Then the authors uses the four steps of moral education implementing,that is,real situational frame of event,clear guidance,criticism framework,transformation of practice proposed by London group to put forward suggestions on the ideological and political teaching activities of English in junior high schools.This dissertation also aims to improve the awareness of English teachers in the front-line work to attach importance to the cultivation of students’ ideological and political literacy,further dig into the ideological and political elements in textbooks,and design corresponding moral education classroom activities to improve the overall humanistic literacy of contemporary students to a higher level.
