In real society,chairs are widely used,spread and developed because of their practicability.With different users,different positions and different materials,chairs are no longer just ordinary seats: the royal throne and the Christian Bishop’s throne are not comfortable,but they are the symbols of imperial power respected by thousands of people;and the Chinese family’s dining table is also a symbol of status.On the other hand,a chair is a symbol of status as well as an ancestor.In the torture rooms of the East and the west,there are a kind of horrible chair tools.Whether it is a tiger chair or an electric chair,it is a symbol of pain,death and tragedy.These chairs are not only practical,but also closely related to sociology,behavioristics,aesthetics and psychology.We need to think about the meaning of chair after excluding "sitting",such as the meaning of existence after being discarded;the meaning of vacancy in some specific space;the most important thing is the meaning and function of "chair" repeatedly appearing in the picture.With the hands of artists,"chair" is no longer a chair.This ordinary small furniture has lost its original meaning and is showing its new look.This is what the author wants to study after the "chair" stripping the meaning of sitting.The purpose is to help myself to organize my thoughts and go further in my creation by sorting out and classifying my own creation.The text of this paper is divided into six chapters,through the use of case study method and literature survey method,the symbolic meaning of chair in art works are studied,sorted and classified,summed up the symbolic meaning of "chair" in art works of four major properties,namely class,times,identity and metaphor,and focus on the demonstration of examples in contemporary painting art works:The first chapter: an overview of the reasons for the topic,research purposes and methods,as well as the research status at home and abroad.Through the analysis and summary of the above literature,the paper determines the research content and puts forward the research problems.The second chapter: the concept of chair and the image history of chair in paintings.The third chapter: mainly discusses the cultural connotation of the chair image as a visual symbol in art since modern times.It studies the humanistic connotation of chair and "chair" symbol from the integration of Chinese and Western works such as installation,sculpture,print,image,painting and other different art fields,and sorts out the multiple symbolic meanings of "chair" symbol in modern times Class,creatively,puts forward four functional characteristics of symbols,namely: class,era,identity and metaphor.The fourth chapter: according to the four performances of the "chair" symbol proposed in the conclusion of the second chapter,collect contemporary painting works,use the methods of contrast,case analysis and literature research,and make targeted counter evidence of the "chair" symbol in contemporary painting art,so as to confirm the correctness of the conclusion of the third chapter.The fifth chapter: mainly compares the author’s creation with the four performances of "chair" symbol,expounds the concept of self-creation,analyzes the connotation of "chair" symbol in self creation,and analyzes the main forms of expression in self creation.Chapter six: the summary of the whole paper and the prospect of future creation.
