An Analysis Of The "Defamiliarization" Technique In The Creation Of Contemporary Figurative Painting

Russian formalism is a western literary school born at the beginning of last century.It is unique in the world literary world because of its vanguard aesthetic point of view,and has influenced the development trend of the whole western literary theory at that time.It is not difficult to find the shadow of Russian formalism theory in the later academic trends of thought in France,including narratology,structuralism and the Anglo-American New Criticism,which is enough to show its pivotal position in the history of world aesthetics.Although the flourishing period of Russian formalism was quite short,it opened the prelude of modern western literature in the 20 th century for later generations,and continued to influence every field of art today.The theory of "defamiliarization" is one of the most important core concepts of Russian formalism,which was first proposed by Viktor Shklovsky.The theory of "defamiliarization" was mainly applied to the analysis of literary works in the early stage,and gradually developed to the analysis of all artistic works in the later stage.When this theory is applied to the analysis of painting works,the main object of our analysis is no longer the theme,emotion and object in the work,but the content such as the formal language and artistic skills of painting as the focus of analysis.Luc Tuymans is one of the representative figures of contemporary western easel painting.As a budding artist at the end of last century,he successfully continued and developed the painting creation method of artists using public image resources since Richter.Though seemingly simple at the time,Tuymans’ works cleverly used various techniques to achieve the effect of defamiliarization on the images.This paper mainly takes Tuymans’ earlier paintings as examples to try to explain the role and significance of "defamiliarization" in the expression of contemporary figurative painting.The paper is divided into four parts.The first part explains the background and concept of "defamiliarization" theory.Firstly,the relationship between Russian formalism and futurism is described.After explaining the concepts of "defamiliarization" and "automation",examples are analyzed in literary works.The second part returns to the contemporary figurative painting and analyzes the effect of "defamiliarization" in painting.Through the combination of specific painting works from the painting schema language,and artistic techniques.The third part starts with Tuymans’ painting works,analyzes his "defamiliarization" treatment of images and themes,and summarizes the effect of "defamiliarization" in his works.The fourth part,on the basis of summarizing the full text,combined with personal creation practice and experience,provides a new perspective and further understanding of the "defamiliarization" creation technique.
