Language and culture are interdependent. And idioms are the essence of native language and they bear profound national culture. So in addition to considering linguistic forms, idiom translation should also focus on cultural factors.“Dog”,as a sort of typically culture-loaded animal,is endowed with contrary cultural connotations in the West and China. However, the study on the application of domestication and foreignization in dog-related idiom translation is still controversial.Hence, this thesis is to study the application of domestication and foreignization in the E-C translation of idioms of “dog”.A Dictionary of Current Idiomatic English(ADCIE)and Oxford Idioms Dictionary(OID)contain 60 idioms of “dog” which are taken as corpora to discuss the application of translation strategies of idioms of “dog” through analytical method, literature studies and case studies. After analysis, the thesis reaches a conclusion, the advantages of foreignization are demonstrated in retaining the implicatures, retaining the preferences of expressions, retaining the emotional colors, the conventions, values and aesthetics of source language while the limitations of domestication in dog-related idiom translation are showed in abandoning or substituting some source language images. Therefore, foreignization is chosen seriously as a dominant strategy for dog-related idiom translation with domestication for that as a complement. This study not only conforms to the trend of cultural globalization but also promotes cultural exchanges. |
