| In the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the society was stable and the economy was prosperous. The spiritual and cultural needs of all social classes led to the prosperity of the painting and calligraphy market, and literati works were inevitably traded in the art market. This paper mainly takes Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin as examples to study the influence of social and economic status on the works of painters.First of all,it describes the changes of social and economic status in the middle of Ming Dynasty.Because of the decadence of the imperial examination system, the literati with knowledge were unable to advance to official positions. In this context, merchants with strong purchasing power have driven the prosperity of the painting and calligraphy market. There are more and more professional painters, and scholars also participate in the market to varying degrees.Next,it analyzes the social status of Wen Zhengming and Tang Yin from their backgrounds, friends, their different experiences and ways of living. These factors influence their choice of themes. As a central figure in Shanghai’s art circle at that time,Wen Zhengming prefers to depict scenes of life, and he uses the social nature of painting and calligraphy to establish connections with people of different classes. However,Tang Yin,who is busy with survival, presents a secular and diversified theme, which is liked by all social classes. In this way,he can initiate social communication and interpersonal interaction through his creation, and at least secure his own material life, and establish his own social status and identity.Compared with Tang Yin,who lives at the lower end of society and makes a living purely by painting, the social economy has less impact on Wen Zhengming’s painting style. So,it can be seen that their socioeconomic status results in differences in their living conditions and social circles,as well as in their aesthetic orientations, which are reflected in their works. |
