This thesis mainly focuses on the cinema and film culture consumption in the South Gate of Xi’an from 1930 to 1949.Starting from the perspectives of cultural consumption history and regional social history, focusing on the construction of movie theaters in the southern courtyard of Xi’an during the Republic of China, consumer cultural experience, and analysis of how film culture influences or promotes the process of urban modernization in Xi’an,etc.Since Xi’an recorded film screenings on September 11,1910,most of its main screening venues were teahouses, theaters or open-air theaters. The limitation of venues and the shortage of equipment became a major factor restricting the screening of early films in Xi’an.In the following period of time(1910-1920s),film screenings in Xi’an mainly relied on mobile screenings from other provinces.Until the 1930 s,with the introduction of the "Accompanied Capital Xijing Plan",the urban transportation environment and infrastructure were effectively improved, and the urban population was also steadily increased. The construction of cinemas for revolving doors to show movies began to be on track and was born.Cinemas with relatively complete facilities and relatively standardized management, such as the Afanggong Grand Theater and the Minguang Electric Theater.Since then,Xi’an’s cinemas have gradually influenced and changed the urban cultural form of Xi’an in a way with modern cultural characteristics. It is worth mentioning that in the 1930 s,the construction of local cinemas in Xi’an mostly revolved around the South Yard Gate area.As the traditional political and commercial center of Xi’an,the South Yard Gate has its own location advantages and convenient transportation. The area became one of the few spaces in the urban space of Xi’an that could meet the growth of new things like movie theaters, and the gathering of guild halls and bank houses once again consolidated the location of Nanyuanmen’s commercial “golden location”.Since then, the continuous upgrading of theaters and the incandescence of business competitions have promoted the transformation and transformation of traditional entertainment modes while advancing the development of modern film culture. The arrival of movies has established Xi’an people who have been trapped in the traditional fog for a long time. The imagination of modern fashion lifestyles, and the two-way interaction between the audience and the film has also continuously nurtured the local movie-viewing preferences and film cultural characteristics of Xi’an.The continuous formation of cinema cultural space also makes cinemas gradually break away from the basic function of movie screening. In this thesis, the Afang Palace Theater is the main research object, and it explores how the Xi’an Cinema in the Republic of China realized the composite function transformation of a single architectural space, and at the same time how to connect the city and the film culture in the mutual plastic symbiosis.Until it became a "landscape" in the city section of Xi’an in the Republic of China.
