English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2020 Revision)classifies learning strategies from four aspects: meta-cognitive strategies, cognitive strategies, communicative strategies and emotional strategies. In order to emphasize the necessity of language learning strategies,it advocates the cultivation and improvement of students’ language learning strategies.Different from the previous studies, which usually take students in a single grade as the research participants, this thesis chooses the grade one and grade three students of senior high school. It is hoped to compare the similarities and differences between the grade one and grade three in the use of English learning strategies.Using Oxford(1990)Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL)as the research tool, this thesis selects 300 students in Yantai No.1 Middle School,including150 students in grade one and 150 students in grade three,to issue questionnaires. After that, this thesis uses SPSS.22 to analyze the collected data.In addition, this thesis also conducts interviews with teachers to ensure the diversity of data sources.Three questions are the focus of this paper:(1)What is the using status of English learning strategies adopted by grade one students?(2)What is the using status of English learning strategies adopted by grade three students?(3)What are the similarities and differences of English learning strategies adopted by grade one and three students?According to the analysis of the questionnaire data and the interview results, the following conclusions are drawn:(1)According to Oxford’ frequency distribution scale, third grade students adopt learning strategies more frequently than first grade students. The frequency of English learning strategies adopted by grade one is 3.216,and that of grade three is 3.279,both of which are at a medium level. In addition, according to the data analysis, emotional strategies are the most commonly used learning strategies for grade one and grade three.(2)The order in which language learning strategies are used is the same in grade one and grade three. The best language learning strategies mastered by students of both grades are emotional strategies, followed by meta-cognitive strategies and cognitive strategies, and communicative strategies are the worst used strategies by students of both grades. But,the sub-strategies that the two grades are good at is also different. Therefore,English teachers in the grade one should pay more attention to encouraging and guiding students to adopt language learning strategies to stimulate their enthusiasm for learning. Then, both grade one and grade three students should increase the frequency of using communicative strategies. In senior high school English teaching, for sake of increasing the communication between teachers and students,it is constructive to adopt the interactive classroom model.
