This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report whose source text is excerpted from The Victory Garden written by Rhys Bowen,a contemporary British novelist. The book tells a beautiful and heartbreaking story of a woman’s pursuit of love and an independent life during the First World War.Emily Bryce was brought up in the cocoon of love of her parents. As the Great War is still raging, she is determined to escape from the tedium of her daily life and contribute to the war effort. In the first four chapters,Emily encounters Robbie.Encouraged by Robbie and her friend Clarissa,Emily gradually develops an idea of running away.By describing Emily’s choice of escaping from an easy life and heading for dangers and horrors,Rhys Bowen reveals the awakening of women’s self-consciousness and the women’s pursuit of freedom, love, and self-recognition.By translating excerpts from this novel, the translator aims to provoke readers’ deep thoughts about the fate of women and the awakening of women’s self-consciousness.Meanwhile,the translator intends to help readers to understand the history and social culture of that time as well as the brutality of the war,and call on people to cherish peace. The translator analyzes the original text in more detail.Considering the type and style of the original text, the translator adopts the semantic translation and communicative translation put forward by Peter Newmark as the guiding theory and mainly analyzes the source text from lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels. In order to clearly convey the original meaning and style and make the translation version smooth and fluent, the translator uses some translation methods, such as addition, extension, and conversion of words, adjustment of sentence order, and sentence combination. The translator has drawn a lot of inspiration from this translation practice.First, the translation of literary works is different from that of other texts.Translators should not only translate information accurately but also pay attention to emotional transmission.Second, since the English-Chinese translation is a kind of activity that involves two languages, translators should attach equal importance to English learning and Chinese learning.Third, the translation is not the work of a single day, which means translators should keep learning, practising, and expanding knowledge, and shoulder a high sense of responsibility.
