The contemporary phenomenon of “scholars’ writing novels” is the inevitable result of the trend of scholarization of authors and authorization of scholars.Among these writers,Xu Zhaoshou’s novels deserves special attention, whose works, such as The Unusual Diary,A Question in the Waste Land and Kumarash, have attracted wide attention and praise. His writing, whether in early novels about school,or in recent ones about the western areas, always adheres to his own spiritual standpoint and academic style.Consequently,he,as it were, plays a unique part in novel creation(also in academic research). This paper takes his novels as the research object, attempting to analyze and clarify systematically Xu’s novel creation as well as generalize and summarize his scholar characteristics shown in the creation so as to give objective and comprehensive evaluation. This paper is divided into five parts. The introduction briefly refers to Xu’s multicultural identity and literary creation, and makes a summary of the current relevant research status. The first chapter is mainly about his early novels on campus, analyzing them from campus love, students and campus itself. The second summarizes the features in his western-area novels by combing the natural images, the history and ecological reflection of the regions, which helps to point out the highlighted richness of the western spirit in the novels. The third focuses on the analysis of the novels’ academic style, exploring the interactive relationship between academic writing and novel creation, analyzing the ideological nature, academic rationality and criticism of the novels, and explaining the causes of its academic style. The epilogue mainly concerns the value and limitation of Xu’s novel creation in hope of drawing more attention on it from readers and critics.
