Report On The E-C Translation Of Mrs Osmond (Excerpt) Based On Semantic Translation And Communicative Translation

This dissertation is an E-C translation report of Mrs Osmond(excerpt)based on the framework of semantic translation and communicative translation.As a psychological realist novel,Mrs.Osmond is essentially a literary narrative work that tells stories,and the difficulties of such literary works are how to effectively transfer the unique language and emotional value of the original text to the target language readers,so it is a continuation of Henry James’ s novel The Portrait of a Lady.Semantic translation and communicative translation of Newmark play a guiding role in this kind of translation.Mrs.Osmond is a narrative work,whose basic feature is to tell a story,that is to say,to narrate,and it is also a novel of psychological realism,which describes real life according to actual situations,indirectly explores the characters’ psychology,depicts the characters in detail and makes efforts to render the atmosphere of the environment with some symbolic and grotesque techniques being integrated.Therefore,Mrs.Osmond is not a single type text but a mixed text.Based on semantic translation and communicative translation of Newmark,this dissertation analyzes and summarizes the English-Chinese translation of image,action,portrait,psychological and dialogue description in the text.In the process of translation,for the purpose of transmitting these five different descriptions to the target readers accurately,semantic translation,communicative translation and translation techniques should be adopted according to the differences between English and Chinese languages,which can maintain the narrative style of the original text,make the translation accurate and carry out creative translation to the original text on account of faithfulness so as to maintain the original effect of the source text.This translation report is of great significance to the study of the translation of literary narrative works of psychological realism.It can also deepen the research on the practical application of semantic translation and communicative translation theory.Therefore,this translation practice report is of great innovation value and of a referential significance.
