Ogawa Shinsuke was a famous documentary filmmaker in Japan and was well recognized as the "Master of Japanese Documentary".Committed to "authentic expression",this director had brought 18 documentary films to this world during his career life. The content of Ogawa’s film is devoted to his concern and passion for farmers and land,as well as a complete record of political events in Japanese history. The success of the documentary Sanrizuka series made Ogawa Shinsuke enter the field of vision of filmmakers at home and abroad, while the Makino Series completed in the following 13 years was relatively scarce in film history materials and scholarly research.Taking Ogawa’s documentaries as the research object, the author discusses the similarities and differences of his film style with a comparative analysis on two of his most representative series, and summarizes the innovations and contributions of the documentaries to make more in-depth and comprehensive analysis on his filming technique and artistic features. Therefore, the study of his documentary film is an indispensable part to understand his "documentary spirit".The establishment of Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival fulfills his "documentary spirit" as it not only opened the Asian documentary market, but also influenced generations of Chinese independent documentary directors positively. The author believes that the discussion on the evolution of Ogawa Shinsuke’s "documentary spirit" may push forward the study of the development of his documentary films and provides reference.
