| The development of English teaching in history can be generally divided into two stages.The first stage of teaching only focuses on the cultivation of language skills such as pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar.The second stage of English teaching gradually turns to the teaching of culture.English has since been regarded as a language with both instrumental and humanistic characteristics by the world community.Culture teaching emphasizes the introduction of the culture of the target language,which means that the acquisition of the culture of the target language is helpful to improve the ability of communication with the people from countries of target language and to promote the exchange of cultural knowledge such as science and technology.However,Intercultural Communication(IC)Theory points out that communication is a two-way cultural exchange,which means both sides of communication should learn the advanced culture of the target language and use the target language to spread the mother tongue culture.General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)further puts forward the goal of cultural awareness,which requires students to realize Chinese cultural identity on the basis of understanding the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures,strengthen cultural confidence,and be able to spread and promote Chinese culture in intercultural communication.Liangshan A middle school is a typical ethnic middle school with Yi students as the main body and Chinese as the main teaching language.However,in English teaching,the school attaches more importance to the culture of Englishspeaking countries than the mother tongue culture.Yi culture is not only the mother tongue culture in Yi minority areas,but also an important part of Chinese culture.Therefore,it is of great significance for Yi students to integrate Yi culture into English teaching to realize ethnic cultural identity and spread Yi culture through English.Through the investigation of the current situation of the integration of Yi culture into English teaching in Liangshan A middle school,it is found that most English teachers and students are very interested in Yi culture and the integration of Yi culture into English teaching,and also agree that the acquisition of Yi culture is conducive to intercultural communication;Yi teachers and students have a higher understanding of Yi language and culture,but their ability to express Yi culture in English is limited;normal English teaching focuses on language teaching,yet the introduction of Yi culture and its English expression into English classroom exists;teachers from different grades and ethnic backgrounds have different emphases in integrating Yi culture,but the common teaching methods include vocabulary explanation and situational sentence making,and the preferred teaching method for both teachers and students is the comparison of Yi culture and English culture;the current English teaching resources of Yi culture are far from enough.Based on the current situation,this paper further reveals the following problems:the teaching objectives focus on language teaching and give less attention on Yi culture;teachers lack the understanding of Yi culture and its English expression,and fail to master the strategies of integrating Yi culture into English teaching;students lack interest in Yi culture and its English expression,and their ability to express Yi culture in English is limited.The reasons that affect the integration of Yi culture into English teaching in senior high school mainly include: the English syllabus has no requirements for the integration of Yi culture into English teaching;the school has insufficient understanding of the importance of the integration of Yi culture into English teaching;the teachers lack the teaching literacy of integrating Yi culture into English teaching;the English learning of Yi students is affected by the differences between Yi and Han cultures.In order to better integrate Yi culture into senior high school English teaching,the following measures are proposed: the school should strengthen the construction of school-based English teaching resources,carry out teaching and research activities of integrating Yi culture into English teaching,actively carry out various teaching activities to stimulate students’ interest in learning English,cultivate English teachers’ teaching literacy in Yi culture,and introduce Developmental Evaluation(DE)for integrating Yi culture into English teaching. |
