In the history of the development of contemporary Chinese literature,Eileen Chang can be considered an unmissable presence, and she has also created a different kind of splendor in the square of the movie screen. Many famous directors have made film and television adaptations of her classic novels since the 1980 s.As a product of the intersection of multiple “gazes”.It is easy to form a “fissure " between the film director and the screenwriter, the creator and the audience. This " fissure” can be understood as the inconsistency and incongruity between the creation, shooting or screening of a film and its author’s creative intent. In this study, the “fissure” is mainly reflected in the compromise or neglect of Eileen Chang’s aesthetic pursuit in the film, the director’s miscontrol of Eileen Chang’s original novel’s intention or the transcendence of the original novel through visualization, and the audience’s controversy over Eileen Chang’s screenplay. This study will explore the cultural phenomenon of the “fissure”between Eileen Chang’s personal screenwriting experience and other directors’ visual adaptations of Eileen Chang’s novels,in order to provide a new perspective for the study of Eileen Chang’s cross-media narratives.
