| The Literature History of the Indigenous Ethnic Minorities in Guizhou : Miao(Ⅰ)is written by members of two organizations,Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission of Guizhou Province and Leading Group Office of Science and Technology Education of Guizhou Province. It was published in 2017,introducing the development of the literature of Miao in different periods. The second section,Long Narrative Poem of Love,is selected as the source text(ST).The section mainly introduces the contents of five widely-spread poems, each followed by the illustrations and comments of the writer. In addition, several poems’ excerpts are quoted in the ST to show the charms of the Miao literature.According to Reiss’ s Text Typology, the ST is both informative and expressive,so it encompasses the features of the two types.Specially,in lexical level,it is rich in culture-loaded words of Miao culture. Also, there are some words whose defined connotation can only be caught in a specific context. In syntactic level, many rhetorical devices like quotation, metaphor and parallelism are applied in the ST.Furthermore,a few long sentences with implicit logic can be seen in the ST.In discourse level, paragraph cohesion is one point easy to draw readers’ attention.Additionally, more than one unit of thought are arranged within a paragraph. And the extracted poem excerpts are of unique features.Based on the features of the ST,the translator chooses Skopos Theory proposed by Hans J.Vermeer to guide the translation practice.Skopos Theory assumes that the expected goal of a translation determines the selection of translation strategies and methods in the whole process.During the process, three rules, skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule are supposed to be followed. On the foundation of the requirements and guidance of Skopos Theory, the strategy domestication, the methods like transliteration with annotation, paraphrase, amplification, omission and division are adopted in the report,so as to solve the translation difficulties in lexical, syntactic and discourse level. The report comprises of four chapters.Chapter one is task description, illustrating the background, objective, significance and structure of the project.Chapter two is process description, introducing the content and features of the ST,as well as Skopos Theory and previous studies on the translation of Miao literature at home and abroad. In addition, the translation difficulties in lexical, syntactic and discourse levels are rendered in the chapter.Chapter three is case analysis, offering detailed analyses to each case under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Chapter four is conclusion, summarizing the findings and limitations from the translation task.Through the analysis and exploration of specific cases with translation difficulties, the report hopes that it can provide some inspirations and thoughts for the English translation of literature works of ethnic minorities in Chinese language, together with the additional application of Skopos theory. |
