The cognitive processing of vocabulary recognition has been the focus and difficulty of linguistic psychology, and it is also a controversial area in many studies.Vocabulary recognition refers to the process of semantic extraction of perceived words. This process is affected by many factors such as the font, stimulus quality, frequency, and context of the vocabulary. The interaction of these factors has aroused the research interest of many researchers. For the processing mechanism of word recognition, researchers mostly support the Multistage Activation Model and the Interactive Activation Model. The Multistage Activation Model believes that there is a threshold for the activation transmission between the stages in the word recognition process. After a certain stage is activated, the activation will spread to the next stage if it reaches a certain activation level, and the interaction between the stages depends on conscious feedback, that is to say,the semantic processing stage transmits activation to the early processing stage through feedback, thereby promoting vocabulary recognition. However, the Interactive Activation Model believes that there is no threshold between the stages of word recognition. After one stage is activated,it will quickly spread to the next stage(advanced cascade processing),and the advanced processing stage will also give feedback to the previous stage(automation feedback),and the processing stage is two-way.Although the two theoretical models have different interpretations of word recognition, both models believe that when the semantic related proportion is high(0.5),there is an interaction between stimulus quality and semantic priming and when the related proportion is low(0.25),there are differences between the two theoretical models. The Multistage Activation Model believes that the individual’s conscious feedback disappears at this time, and there is additive effect between stimulus quality and semantic priming, while the Interactive Activation Model believes that even without additional feedback, there is still an interaction between stimulus quality and semantic priming, and the early processing stage of word recognition will act on the semantic processing stage through advanced cascade processing. This study adopted strict selection of experimental materials, controlled experimental conditions, and adopted a variety of experimental paradigms. The purpose is to fundamentally resolve the dispute between these two theoretical models, verify the interactive activation model from many aspects, and resolve the disputes about the priming effect caused by similar fonts, and clarify the internal processing mechanism of Chinese character recognition, and lay the foundation for further solving problems in language psychology.Experiment 1 adopts a 2(semantic priming vs.no semantic priming)× 2(clear vs.fuzzy 6levels)within-subject design and lexical-decision task, using semantic priming paradigm, and the semantic related proportion is controlled at a low level(0.25)to study the interaction of Chinese character between stimulus quality and semantic priming. The results show that there is a significant main effect of stimulus quality in the RT and accuracy.Clear stimulus is more quickly than fuzzy stimulus in RT,and the error rate is lower, indicating that the processing of experimental material quality is sufficient. There is a significant main effect of semantic priming in accuracy, and there is no interaction between stimulus quality and semantic priming.Researchers believe that behavioral indicators are easily effected by experimental tasks and the trade-off between speed and accuracy, while EEG indicators are more objective. In the EEG component N400,there is a significant main effect of stimulus quality.Compared with clear stimulus, ambiguity stimulus causes a larger N400 amplitude. There is a significant interaction between stimulus quality and semantic priming in the N400 by larger stimulus quality effects for no semantic priming than for semantic priming. The experimental results show that when the semantic related proportion is low, without conscious additional feedback, the early processing stage where the stimulus quality is located can act on the semantic processing stage through advance cascade processing,so that the processing between the two stages is almost simultaneous. The research results support the Interactive Activation Model. When studying the internal processing of vocabulary recognition, many studies focus on the interaction between semantic priming and stimulus quality, and the research paradigm is relatively single.Since the semantic priming paradigm itself has the additional effect of awakening the semantics, the more neutral orthographical priming paradigm was adopted in experiment 2.In order to avoid the extra phonological priming in the experimental materials in the past research on orthographical priming, the choice of experimental materials in this study is more stringent. The task is the same as Experiment 1,using lexical decision task.Experiment 2 adopts a 2(orthographical priming vs.no orthographical priming)× 2(clear vs.fuzzy 6 levels)within-subject design. The results show that there is a significant main effect of orthographical priming in RT,and the response time of orthographical priming is longer than that of no orthographical priming, and find the negative priming effect(inhibition)of orthographical priming. There is a significant main effect of stimulus quality, and there is a significant interaction between orthographical priming and stimulus quality in RT and N400 by larger stimulus quality effects for no orthographical priming than for orthographical priming. On the basis of experiment one that proves that stimulus quality could affect semantic processing stage through advanced cascade processing, the research results of experiment two show that orthographical priming and stimulus quality act on the same processing stage, and both of them act on semantic processing stage through advanced cascade processing, which validates the Interactive Activation Model in many aspects, and further solves the internal mechanism of vocabulary recognition. In addition, the second experiment proved the inhibitory effect caused by the similarity of the glyphs by strictly controlling the experimental materials and avoiding the additional influencing factors in the previous experiments, resolving the debate on the orthographical priming effect, and verified the interactive activation model from another perspective. The research results of Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 show that there is no threshold for the activation between each stage of vocabulary recognition. The early processing stage affected by orthography will act on the semantic processing stage through advanced cascade processing,so that the processing of each stage is almost simultaneous. The correctness and applicability of the Interactive Activation Model are verified from multiple perspectives, which provides ideas for solving the internal mechanism of vocabulary recognition.
