Applying Literary Map In Teaching High School Students’ English Novel Reading:A Minor Experiment

This research introduces the concept and method of literary map into mind map,leads the reading of English novels with innovative and enriched mind map models,and explores the application of literary map in teaching high school students’ English novel reading.Using Autodesk sketchbook software,the text space of English novels with complex geographic information is mapped into a visual map model.A new visual description of the novel is carried out.The author guided students to participate in comprehension and creation by drawing literary maps when reading English literary works to help them better understand the geographical environment described in the novel and determine the location of the novel’s plot.The literary map helps students increase reading interest,improve reading habits,and further improve reading ability.This thesis is designed to explore the following three questions:(1)What’s the effect of the literary map method on senior high school students’ English novels reading interest?(2)What’s the effect of the literary map method on senior high school students’ English novels reading habits?(3)What’s the effect of the literary map method on senior high school students’ English reading ability?In order to answer the above questions,the author designed the corresponding teaching experiment:The author has chosen two classes of senior one as the research subjects.There were60 students in each class.Class Nine is the experimental class(EC),using the method of drawing literary map to read English novels;Class Eight is the control class(CC),using the traditional method to read English novels,without guiding them to draw literary map in the process.Before the experiment,the students’ current reading proficiency in the two classes was tested through the English reading comprehension test,and the current situation of their English novel reading was known through the questionnaire and interview.The whole experiment lasted for three months,and students read two English novels.After the experiment,the students of the two classes were tested again with English reading comprehension test.At the same time,questionnaires and interviews were collected in the experimental class.After comparing the test scores of the two classes before and after the experiment,the author analyzed the influence of literary map on senior high school students’ English reading ability.Then the author compared the changes in the reading interest and reading habits of the students in the experimental class through questionnaires and analyzed the influence of the literary map on the students’ novel reading interest and reading habits.Finally,the author investigated students’ views on using literary map to assist English novel reading through interviews.Through this experiment,the author studied the effects of literary map in teaching English novel reading in senior high school.The data in this research were analyzed by SPSS21.0.The major findings are as follows:(1)Applying literary map in teaching high school students’ English novel reading can help increase students’ reading interest.(2)Applying literary map in teaching high school students’ English reading can help improve their reading habits.(3)Applying literary map in teaching high school students’ English novel reading can help students improve their comprehensive reading ability.
