| Background: Patients with internet gaming disorder(IGD)show an imbalanced behavioral activation system(BAS),behavioral inhibition system(BIS)sensitivity,and which correlated to impaired function of stratum,amygdala and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(dl PFC).However,the neurobiological mechanism of IGD with difference BAS/BIS features remains unclear.Method: We recruited 154 IGD and matched 229 non-addicted recreation gaming users(RGU)in current study.BAS/BIS traits,severity of the gaming disorder,and resting state f MRI data were collected.Firstly,we explore the relationship between BAS/BIS and IGD through ttest and machine learning methods.Secondly,all participants were subdivided into sub-group(high/low BAS/BIS trait)by the latent profile analysis(LPA).Thirdly,whole-brain functional connectivity of bilateral striatum,amygdala and dl PFC seed regions were estimated for each participant using resting functional connectivity(rs FC)and effective connectivity(rs EC)for each sub-group.Fourthly,mediation analysis was performed to explore the role of this key functional connection results in the relationship between severity disorder and BAS/BIS traits.Finally,machine learning(support vector regression)were performed to estimate the stability of the results and to look for connections that contribute significantly to both IGD and BAS/BIS traits.Results: The IGD group scored significantly higher than RGU group on BIS and BASf(fun seeking)traits,and contributed the most to predicting IAT scores.Then LPA identified 4 subgroup: low/high risk of IGD and low/high BIS/BAS traits groups.Two-way ACOVA results of interaction effects showed that,in the IGD group,the higher BAS/BIS individuals(comparing with lower)exhibited increased strength in the rs FC between the left accumbens and the anterior cingulate and the right middle frontal gyrus,the rs EC from the right dl PFC to the left postcentral gyrus;and reduced strength in the rs EC from the the left superior frontal lobe to centromedial amygdala.Then,the rs EC from the centromedial amygdala to the middle frontal gyrus mediated the directional relationship between BIS and IAT scores.Finally,using machine learning,we found the neural connectivity results could predict both IGD sevirity and BAS scores.Conclusion: High BASf and BIS traits appears to be the risk factors of internet gaming disorder.The prefrontal-striatal,amygdala-prefrontal and prefrontal-postcentral pathways,underlying impaired reward inhibition and emotional regulation,are the neural bases of IGD with different BAS/BIS traits.This study unraveled the neural mechanism underlying BAS/BIS in IGD and inspired new target for future treatment of IGD based on this severe impairment. |
