It is believed that Hsiao Chao’s Divination by Throwing Chess is the seventh paragraph of Auspicious Omens for Dynastic Revival.Through textual research, this paper holds the opinion that Hsiao Chao should be born before 1127 AD.and pass away after 1174 AD.Although some experts opine that Divination by Throwing Chess may be painted by Hsiao Chao himself, but this paper disagrees.Through analyzing the architectural and painting style, this paper believes that it may be a copy version from the Li Tang School in the late Southern Sung.Adopting the methodologies of Form Analysis and Iconography, this article holds the idea that Divination by Throwing Chess absorbed the merits of both China’s native painting and Buddhist painting styles, and embody the meaning of auspicious omen with the image of the empress dowager Wei.Moreover,Divination by Throwing Chess also created a new graphic style which adopts personage painting to convey the meaning of auspicious omen, therefore expands the boundary of the field of traditional Chinese personage painting.
