With the rapid development of China’s economy and the continuous improvement of its international status,China’s exchanges with African countries have become closer.The exchanges between Rwanda and China are no exception.There are exchanges and cooperation to varying degrees in the fields of politics,economy and culture,as well as medical treatment,trade,import and export,and education.Therefore,more and more Rwandans have strong interest and yearning for China,and their enthusiasm for learning Chinese is high.Good motivation can help learners stimulate their interest in learning and improve their learning quality.In teaching Chinese as a foreign language,it is particularly important for Chinese teachers to effectively stimulate and cultivate Chinese learners’ learning motivation.Many experts and scholars at home and abroad have studied the motivation of second language learning,leaving a wealth of theoretical results.On this basis,the author uses Gardner’s theory of learning motivation for reference to investigate the motivation of Chinese learners in Rwanda.This paper makes a questionnaire survey on 67 Rwandese Chinese learners.The results show that: 1)the motivation of Rwandese Chinese learners is strong.2)Boys’ instrumental motivation is stronger than girls’ and girls’ integrative motivation is slightly significant.3)Age affects the motivation of Rwandese Chinese learners,and20-25-year-old Rwandese Chinese learners have the highest level of motivation.4)The time of learning Chinese will affect the learning motivation,and the motivation of Rwandese Chinese learners will weaken slightly with the increase of learning time.5)There is no significant relationship between learning motivation and HSK level of Rwandese Chinese learners.Finally,according to the results of this study,combined with the actual situation of Chinese learners in Rwanda,this paper puts forward suggestions and countermeasures from the aspects of teachers,students and teaching materials,hoping to be helpful to Chinese learners in Rwanda and their Chinese teachers.
