The Faint Hope Picture Book Design

In the visual culture era,picture books have established a picture-based narrative model and become one of the key media in the visual age.As a latecomer in picture books,adult picture books allow their creators to explore profound themes in a more diverse way for readers.This study uses the depression narrative text The Faint Hope as the source of creation,the picture book as the object of study,and adults as the reading group.Under the concept of "shimmering light," the depression bottom to healing is divided into three stages: "darkness," "shimmering light," and "brightness”.The three stages are" darkness," " shimmer,"and" light”.The literature summarizes the current situation that the adult audience of contemporary picture books is expanding year by year.Extant research on picture books shows that the majority of existing picture books use flat,realistic illustration styles and life science topics to echo children’s perceptions and psychology of images.However,today’s picture books need to serve all age groups.Furthermore,no picture book on depression has ever been presented in a collage method.This project adopts the collage method to present illustrations in picture books.After reviewing the development of collage and analyzing the current situation,we found that contemporary collages are fragmented and metaphorical,which correspond to the problem of the lack of subjectivity in the picture-reading era.Therefore,we propose to intervene in the picture with self-image as an attempt to respond to the concept of "shimmer" through different stages of physical expression,and also to complete the identification of the subject through the perspective of the self.The overall picture book is based on collage images and uses three books to respond to the above three stages.In this paper,through the reinterpretation of the original text of The Faint Hope,the self-image is applied to the creation of the picture book,with the hope that the general public can have a better understanding of the psychological state of depressed patients from the perspective of ordinary people.Based on the text,we created a picture book of the book The Faint Hope.By linking and changing the illustrations,we link facts and phenomena with an intuitive image information,and give a more delicate interpretation of the text.
