A Study On The Koryo’s Policy Towards Jurchen In The Middle And Late 14th Century(1351-1392)

Since the founding of Koryo,in order to expand the living space and stabilize the border defense,Koryo has carried out a real policy of recruitment and expropriation and expedition to the North Neighborhood Jurchens.After the establishment of the suzerain vassal relationship between Koryo and the Yuan Dynasty,due to the high political and military pressure of the Yuan Dynasty,Koryo’s northward expansion was hindered,and its communication with Jurchen was limited between the countries.Moreover,in the period of the Mongolian Empire,part of the territory in the north of Koryo was returned to the Yuan Dynasty for treason.In the middle and late 14 th century,the situation in Northeast Asia changed greatly.Because of the change and the turbulence of the political situation between yuan and Ming Dynasties,the tributary system with the Central Plains Dynasty as the core wavered,the restriction of the tributary relationship on the sealing of the state was weakened;Japan is during the division of the Northern and Southern Dynasties,the country has no unified regime,the Japanese pirates took advantage of this chaos;The Koryo has also entered the end of its reign,with frequent changes of the throne and serious foreign invasion.But in this period,because of the chaos in the Central Plains,the Koryo presented a "resurgence" trend,and began a new round of northward expansion,and began to have direct contact with Jurchen.However,due to the changes and development of the overall situation in Northeast Asia and the political changes of Korea Dynasty,the Koryo’s policy towards Jurchen showed the characteristics of periodic changes.The reign of King Gong Min was in the period of the replacement of the Yuan and Ming dynasties.The situation in the Central Plains was turbulent and the tributary relations on Korea weakened.King Gong Min took advantage of the situation to go north to expand his territory.During the reign of King Gong,he vigorously implemented the policy of "anti-Yuan and Zhongxing" policy,intending to get rid of the control of the Yuan Dynasty and restore the native land and expansion territory occupied by the Yuan Dynasty.Under the influence of this intention,Koryo by force to expand the Jurchen region,and attached the yuan and breeding women who picked quarrels to attack.While Korea has gained the opportunity to expand north due to the situation changes in Northeast Asia,Koryo is also facing a certain threat.At that time,the army was threatened by the Red Turban Army in the north of Korea,and the southeast coast was invaded by Japanese pirates.Gaoli arrived at the Red Turban.The royal Japanese pirates in the south needed the support of military strength.At this period,Jurzhen also took the initiative to attach Koryo because of the impact of the situation in Northeast Koryo Therefore,King Gong Min treated the Jurzhen for the consideration of regional expansion,border security and the national military reality.The reign of Xin Wu was the coexistence of the Ming and Northern Yuan regime,and the situation in Liaodong was anxious.Because the pro-Yuan sent power Koryo,prompted the Korean diplomacy to the Northern Yuan from the Ming Dynasty.As the Ming Dynasty gained its advantage in the war in Liao Dong.Koryo attempted to ease relations with the Ming Dynasty,but was subjected to military threats and diplomatic pressure from the Ming Dynasty,which restricted Koryo’s further expansion of its northern neighboring women.In addition,this period of Japanese love outstanding,to some extent also limited Koryo to use soldiers.Therefore,during this period,Koryo basically maintained the sphere of influence extended by the reign of King Gong.However,the Ming Dynasty to Liaodong gradually threatened the security of Koryo border and Koryo’s immediate interest in the Jurzhen area.In this situation,Koryo resisted the Ming Dynasty in force against the Jurchens,and was able to restrain the Jurchens through the Border Security Policy.Li Chenggui assumed the administration of Koryo.During this period,the relationship between Koryo and the Ming Dynasty was eased by the destruction of the Northern Yuan and the frequent tribute to the Ming Dynasty.Therefore,Koryo gained a relatively stable external environment.At the same time,the Ming Dynasty withdrew San Wan Wei and Tieling Wei,which created space for Koryo to expand north.During this period,Li Chenggui was able to govern Koryo because of the relationship with its strong military base with Jurzhen.Because of the deep feelings between Li Chenggui and Jurzhen when living together for a long time,it prompted Li Chenggui to implement a peaceful policy for Jurzhen to maintaining the relationship with Jurzhen and the territorial expansion.
