This report is based on a three-month translation practice. The translated material summarizes the latest research progress on heterostructure hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts. This report aims to advance the scholarly study of the breakthrough of heterostructure hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts, enrich the academic communication centered upon the latest development of hydrogen energy and facilitate excellence in academic research worldwide. This report analyzes the translation problems and provides solutions based on "functional equivalence theory" proposed by Eugene Nida. The author read up and accumulated the background knowledge of electrochemical hydrogen evolution technology and its catalysts before making full use of mature translation tools to grasp the general idea of the source text. The author marked all the problems encountered in the translation process, and provided the corresponding solutions via using various translation strategies.Meanwhile,it is of necessity to read a multitude of papers and journals translated by researchers and have a reflection on them. The problems are mainly divided into three categories: Lexical-semantic problems, syntactical problems and textual problems.Lexical-semantic problems are mainly focused on the management of terminologies and nominal structures, which can be resolved by reading parallel texts and consulting dictionaries, glossaries, terminology banks and experts.Among the syntactical problems encountered in this report are word order and syntactic ambiguity. The provided solutions are the flexible conversion of passive voice and a complete recasting of some difficult sentences.Textual problems are mainly reflected in the cohesion and coherence of sentences, which makes the text more readable. The solutions are to translate pronouns, conjunctions with various meanings and redefine conjunctive pronouns or conjunctive adverbs accurately and reasonably in long and difficult sentences according to the context. This article explains the guiding significance of functional equivalence theory in the translation of materials science texts, and provides some strategies for the Chinese translation of material science texts.Meanwhile, the translator has also polished translation ability through this translation practice. It is hoped that readers of the target language can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the latest researches and discoveries of heterostructure catalysts, accelerate the development of hydrogen energy, and benefit the society.
