Native language transfer is a common phenomenon in junior high students, which means that junior high school students often use Chinese way of thinking to learn English. To some extent, native language transfer clears their learning barriers because there are many sentence structure similarities between English and Chinese. This positive effect is called positive transfer. However, excessive dependence on native language will cause students to make mistakes, which is called negative native language transfer. The author uses Lado’s Native Language Transfer to guide the teaching experiment design,Corder’s error analysis theory to statistic and classify the writing errors of the students in the pre-test of the two classes, and Selinker’s interlanguage theory to analyze the characteristics of students’ wrong expressions and explore the reasons for their mistakes. The study examines how native language transfer has impact on middle school English writing. Two research questions are raised as follows:1.What are the positive and negative effects of native language transfer in junior high school students’ English writing?2.Why negative native language transfer have effects on English writing? Before the experiment, the author conducted a questionnaire survey on the students in two classes to obtain the effect of English writing affected by the transfer of native language. The independent sample T test, based on a monthly examination, was made to ensure that there was no significant differences in English writing level between the two classes. This paper analyzes the pre-test composition of the students and collects those writing materials to explore the influence of native language transfer on students’ English writing. The final composition scores of the two classes is the post-test data. After the experiment, six students at different levels of the experimental class,as well as the instructor teacher, were selected to be interviewed. In this study, paired sample T test was also conducted for the pre-test and post-test results of the experimental class to examine the effectiveness of native language transfer. The study shows the existence of the influence of native language on students’ English writing.Positive transfer of native language promotes students to master sentences with the same word order structure in English and Chinese.Meanwhile, many wrong expressions are related to negative transfer of native language. The results of the study may provide some effective teaching suggestions for middle school English teachers to reduce the influence of negative transfer of native language.
