On Domestication Translation Of The Culture-loaded Words In Camel Xiangzi From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Camel Xiangzi is one of Lao She’s representative works,in which the culture-loaded words embodying the unique cultural customs,language characteristics and geographical landscape have been deeply studied by a large number of scholars at home and abroad.Through literature review,the translation studies of culture-loaded words in this work mostly stay at linguistic level,and seldom involve the field of pragmatics up to now.Domestication translation is closely related to pragmatic adaptation,both of which are oriented towards the target language readers.This thesis discusses the translation of culture-loaded words in Camel Xiangzi from three dimensions,which are contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability and dynamics of adaptability.The research methods used include literature review,case analysis,comparative analysis and so on.Based on pragmatic adaptation theory and domestication strategy,this thesis analyzes the English versions of Camel Xiangzi.The research findings are as follows:(1)Through the analysis of relevant culture-loaded words,it is concluded that domesticated translation is widely used in both Shi Xiaojing’s and Howard Goldblatt’s translations;(2)The domesticating translation strategies adopted in the translation of culture-loaded words in Camel Xiangzi include limited universalization,absolute universalization and so on;(3)The factors that influence the translation strategies of Shi Xiaojing’s and Howard Goldblatt’s culture-loaded words are related to the translator’s intention,the translator’s view of translation,the imbalance of cultural acceptance and the type of text and so forth;(4)In order to adapt to the translator’s translation purpose and the cognitive ability of the target language readers,domesticated translation should be adopted.It’s worth noting that domestication and foreignization are not absolute,and there is a reciprocal transformation between the two.
