Memetics is put forward on the basis of Darwinian theory of evolution,and has been widely used to explain the law of human cultural evolution.Thus,the writing pattern based on memetics can provide a new perspective for English writing teaching.Based on memetic theory,this paper designs teaching activities from the life cycle of memes,which are assimilation,retention,expression and transmission,to help students analyze,understand and apply the materials of writing memes.Since in recent years letter writing has been a trend in the national college entrance examination,this paper takes letter writing as the target of study.The teaching experiment in this study lasts for three months and is aimed at students in two parallel classes in Senior Three of a high school.There are 51 students in each class.The experimental class adopts the English writing teaching pattern based on memetics while the control class adopts the traditional writing teaching pattern.Questionnaires,experiments and interviews are employed to analyze the role of memetic teaching in English writing.This study tries to answer the following two questions:(1)What impact will the English writing pattern based on memetics have on the attitude of high school students toward English writing?(2)Can the English writing pattern based on memetics improve the writing scores of EC better compared with the traditional teaching method of CC?After three-month teaching experiment in EC and CC,this study analyzes the data by means of Excel and SPSS(version 24.0)and finds that: 1.In the experimental class,there is a significant improvement in terms of students’ attitude towards English letter writing after the experiment.Their self-confidence has been boosted;their learning motivation has been further enhanced,and their writing anxiety has been relieved.2.The English writing teaching based on memetics in EC has a better performance in raising students’ writing test scores compared with the traditional writing teaching in CC.3.Students in the experimental class have gradually developed a good habit of diligent accumulation through writing diaries.Besides,their writing vocabulary and sentences become more diversified and enriched.And the logic and consistency of the composition are enhanced,too.
