English text recitation is a learning strategy widely used by junior high school students.Related theoretical researches and empirical researches have proved that English text recitation is helpful to English learning.But as a matter of fact,students are not willing to recite texts,resulting in ideological conflicts between teachers and students over the use of this learning strategy.Therefore,the traditional method of English text recitation needs to be improved.And this is the starting point of this study,which aims to answer the following questions on the premise that English text recitation is conductive to English learning:(1)Are junior high school students generally confronted with an affective filter in fulfilling English text recitation tasks,and to what extent?(2)What are the causes of the affective filter?(3)Is the English text recitation method with low affective filter designed by the author really effective? And does it help to change students’ general attitude towards recitation tasks?(4)What changes will English text recitation method with low affective filter bring about to students from the perspective of the affective filter scale?Two classes of Grade-9 students in a middle school in Fuzhou were selected as the research subjects.After the questionnaire survey and experimental research,this study has found that:(1)The investigated junior high school students have a moderate degree of affective filter in English text recitation;(2)The main causes for affective filter in English text recitation include: lack of understanding of the effectiveness of English text recitation;wrong recitation methods;insufficient review and output activities;and the difficulty of text itself;(3)After the implementation of English text recitation method with low affective filter designed by the author,the affective filter of students in the experimental class has been reduced;(4)After the implementation of English text recitation method with low affective filter,the subjects’ motivation and attitude,views and opinions towards text recitation tasks show a positive change;the cause scale has also changed positively,and more students have learned to use efficient English text recitation method.In view of the above encouraging results,the author hopes that this study may bring some beneficial inspirations to both junior high school teachers and students in English teaching and learning.
