According to the requirements of English Curriculum Standard for Compulsory Education(2011 Edition)issued by the Ministry of Education as well as the demand for the quality of future talents in the new period with the economic development in our country, the general goal of learning English is to equip students with comprehensive language skills,to promote mental development and to improve human literacy.Oral English,as one of the main skills of comprehensive use of language, plays an important role in junior high school English teaching. However,in practical English teaching, teachers pay less attention to oral English teaching and parents do not emphasize oral English learning because oral English grades are not required.Students’ oral expression ability has not been fully improved, and subject literacy cannot be adequately developed. Therefore,it is quite necessary to make a study on how to carry out oral English teaching in junior high schools. On the basis of multimodal discourse analysis, this study attempts to make a study on how to cultivate students’ speaking skills by adopting multimodal teaching in English classroom. This paper is intended to explore the following three issues(1)Does multimodal teaching help students enhance their sense of spoken language and improve test results?(2)Does multimodal teaching help foster students’ awareness of oral expression and improve their communicative competence?(3)Does multimodal teaching help improve the accuracy and fluency of students’ oral expression? In this study, two parallel classes,Class 5 and Class 6,Grade Seven of Lianjiang Wenbi Middle School in Fujian Province, were chosen as the subjects.A three-month experimental study was carried out by means of literature research, questionnaire investigation and experiment.Class 5 is the experimental class which adopted the multimodal oral teaching mode, while Class 6,as the controlled class, employed the traditional oral teaching mode. With the help of the questionnaires designed before and after the experiment, the author used independent sample T test and paired sample T test to analyze the oral test scores of the two classes before and after the experiment to explore the changes of students’ oral expression ability. The results show that Multimodal teaching is helpful to increase students’ interest in oral English and enthusiasm to participate in classroom learning;Multimodal teaching is helpful to promote students’ awareness in using oral expression and improve their cross-language communicative competence; In addition, multimodal teaching is helpful to improve the accuracy and fluency of students’ oral expression.Multimodal oral teaching provides another choice for current oral English teaching.Symbol resources are fully utilized in multimodal approach, which will help to actively mobilize the students’ senses of devoting themselves to English learning. Thus, the application of multimodal oral teaching will ultimately help to improve students’ oral English ability. Therefore, this study is of significance in both theoretical and practical aspects. The author hopes that this paper will be helpful to the teaching of oral English in junior high schools.
