Victor Hugo is a great French writer and poet in the 19 th century.He is also a painter who has made great achievements in the field of painting.The total number of his paintings is about 3500.Most of Hugo’s paintings have grotesque shapes,free and loose lines,turbid and strong sense of space,mysterious atmosphere of death,and unique painting language,which have played an immeasurable role in the painting art after the 20 th century.In this paper,Victor Hugo’s paintings on the theme of death are taken as the research object,and the artistic performance characteristics of Hugo’s paintings on the theme of death are analyzed by using the method of iconology.On the basis of iconology research methods,this paper studies and analyzes Hugo’s death theme painting from the perspective of fine arts,history and other disciplines.Using the method of horizontal comparison,this paper makes a comparative analysis of Hugo’s death theme works and the representative artists’ death theme works in art history.This paper comprehensively analyzes the influence of Hugo’s literary works on the theme of death,and the painter’s implied views on life,artistic creation and religious belief in his works.This paper is divided into the following four parts: the first part gives a brief introduction and classification of Victor Hugo’s death paintings;The second part analyzes the artistic characteristics of Victor Hugo’s death theme painting;The third part summarizes the artistic thought and philosophical pursuit of Victor Hugo’s death theme painting;The fourth part explores the causes of Victor Hugo’s death theme painting.Finally,this paper aims to study Victor Hugo’s death theme painting,and provide new research ideas and reference for contemporary painting creation.
