Creating The Sense Of Time

Character documentaries shall record the time process of humans’ life history,and every documentary director needs to solve the problems of how to reasonably arrange time and create an appropriate sense of time for a person’s lifetime or slice of life within limited narrative time.Due to its abstraction,the presentation and expression of time require specific techniques and methods,and the documentaries recording actual events take synchronous record as the basic principle and always include the time of the story and the presentation of the story in the work while involving the back stories of characters.Especially in character documentaries,appropriate time creation is required while displaying the living conditions of characters.Under the premise of guaranteeing the sense of reality,it is necessary to display the past and present records of characters in the film and grasp the construction of tense,so as to express the back stories of characters.In the meantime,while reflecting the sense of time shall be reflected,the texture and thickness of films can be strengthened,and the thoughts and emotions of characters can be better displayed.Combining with the reflection on time design and tense creation in the character documentary Movie of Endless Love in Spring and Autumn by the author,this paper explores how to create the sense of time in character documentaries by analyzing related cases.This paper is divided into four parts: strengthening the tense characteristics by spatial information,extending the reality of the historical space and time,making the counterpoint of sound pictures and tense juxtaposition and presenting tenses of world language.
