| The question of personal identity in the history of philosophy is about talking about change. It aims to discuss how to prove that a person remains the same person when he changes. How is the person from the past consistent with the person from the present,or the same person? The important thing about personal identity is to look at its criteria, what criteria are there to prove that the person’s past is the same as his present. This article starts with the concept of the issue of personal identity, clarifies that the criteria for defining this issue are divided into physical standards and memory standards, and focuses on the exploration of memory standards.Regarding the memory standard of personal identity, there are reductionism and realism standpoints. From the standpoint of realism, the modern empiricist philosopher Locke distinguished between the concepts of human and personality, and believed that human beings are beings with thoughts and wisdom, capable of reason and reflection.Personal identity is based on a person’s memory, not his body.If a person at this time can be aware of a past experience, then he and the person who was experiencing at that time are the same person. However, this article believes that the realist memory theory is defective and has a lot of questions, such as inconsistencies, circular arguments, and insufficient problems. All this shows that the memory theory of realism is not enough to explain the problem of personal identity. In the standpoint of reductionism, unlike memory theory, reductionists put forward the theory of psychological continuity. As long as the person in the past and the person in the present maintain overlapping psychological continuity,it can show that the two people are the same. The theory of mental continuity does not require direct memory connections. The article cited metaphysics, semantics, etc.as research methods, criticized the memory standard of realism, analyzed and defended the psychological continuity theory of reductionism, and tried to solve the problems of the memory theory of realism from the standpoint of reductionism. It also proves that psychological continuity theory is inherently consistent, superior to memory theory, and can adequately explain the issue of personal identity. |
