| This thesis takes many novels of Julian Barnes,a famous British writer,as the object of in-depth study, and explores the spatial characteristics of Barnes’ novels from the perspective of space.Spatial narration has profound significance in Barnes’ s novels and is an important dimension that cannot be ignored in the study of his novels. It not only carries the writer’s cultural imagination for spatial experience, but also carries his creation practice of novel spatial form. This paper will analyze and study Barnes’ novel works from four aspects: spatial form, spatial narrative technique, spatial narrative structure and spatial narrative significance, and discuss how writers construct a multidimensional novel space with space that takes care of narrative plot, narrative structure and narrative strategy. The thesis is divided into three parts: introduction, four chapters and conclusion. The introduction mainly includes three aspects: firstly, the author’s life experience and creation, secondly, the research review of Barnes and her novels, and finally, the sorting out of spatial narrative theory and the summary of the value and methods of the thesis research. The first chapter mainly discusses the diverse spatial forms contained in Barnes’ novels. This thesis tries to divide them into physical space and psychological space. The physical space in the novel is not only the place for plot development and character activities, but also the field where the writer examines and discusses the identity crisis caused by modern civilization and the authenticity of authoritative history.Mental space is the reflection on the reality of memory and the deconstruction of imaginary utopia through recollection narration and dream narration. The second chapter mainly discusses the spatial narrative techniques in Barnes’ novels.Barnes highlights the spatial sense of texts and improves the readers’ aesthetic experience by adopting such narrative techniques as repeated narration, multiple narrative perspectives, juxtaposition, fragmentation and spatiotemporal narration. The third chapter mainly discusses the spatial narrative structure of Barnes’ novels, mainly analyzes the three narrative structures of orange slice narrative, circular narrative and multi-clue narrative in his works. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the significance of spatial narration in Barnes’ novels for the plot development, character image shaping and aesthetics. The epilogue summarizes and emphasizes the spatial characteristics embodied in Barnes’ novels and affirms the significance of Barnes’ spatial narrative practice. From the new perspective of spatial narrative theory,we can see that space in Barnes’ s novels is not only the background of the plot, but also participates in and influences the shaping of characters, the development of the plot and the construction of the theme meaning as a narrative means. The space contained in the text is endowed with cultural, political, historical and moral meanings,Thus, the text becomes a semantic system with strong metaphorical character. |
