John.R.Searle is a famous American philosopher who has made outstanding achievements in the fields of philosophy of mind, philosophy of language and social philosophy.Searle’s philosophical theory began with the study of language. On the basis of his teacher Austin’s philosophical thought,Searle put forward his own theory of speech acts and discovered the intentionality hidden behind speech acts, thus turning his attention to the philosophy of mind.In the theory of intentionality, the question of "how intentionality occurs" is questioned, and a unique and novel background theory is put forward. This paper studies Searle’s background theory based on his whole philosophical theory. In the philosophy of language, the understanding of literal meaning Plays a role of context. In the philosophy of mind it makes possible the representation of intentionality; In social philosophy, background is added to the construction of social reality as the fourth factor, and the proposed background causality further explains the relationship between background and social rules in human behavior. When rules are applied in our social life, the parties concerned are often completely unaware of their existence.Searle’s critique of the concept of the unconscious is based on the context of the non-conscious,non-representational capacities that enable us to cope with our background. The behavior obeying rules is not because of the representation of institutional rules, but the result of the sensitivity of the background. In his research,Searle has always insisted that the background theory is studied at the neurophysiology, but for the background,it is not completely physiological, because it also includes the set of acquired skills, practices,or habits.Although the background theory proposed by him has an important position, there are some disputes in some concepts or proofs in this process, which we should treat dialectically so as to comprehensively understand and grasp.
