| Since the birth of photography in 1839,the photographic documentary is its unique and essential characteristic,which is the fundamental that is distinct from the plastic arts and independent from other categories.With the initiation of the reform and opening-up in China,the influx of western cultural nutrients and various artistic information,there are three crucial developments in Chinese photography.The first blossoming is the "documentary turn" in the 1980 s when the photographer Wu Jialin,from Yunnan,also devoted himself to explore documentary photography.Wu Jialin is the only photographer who has been selected into the "Photo Poche" series of world master photographers in China.His works have distinct personal style,intense regional and Chinese characteristics,and historical and cultural sense.In not only interviews but also images,Wu Jialin has repeatedly mentioned that his photography concept is "impromptu capture,artistic record" ——a perfect integration of real capture and artist performance.Wu Jialin has always paid attention to the relationship between man and nature,man and society,man and history and culture in his fifty-year practice.Instead of jumping on the bandwagon,he penetrated the folk and described the natural state as well as beautiful moments of ordinary people more closely,from the perspective of the mountain folk.Wu’s images reveal the personality and unique national temperament that are in line with his blood,forming his unique "visual dialect" and personal style.Marc Riboud called his opus “good cure for extravagant urban disease”.This paper mainly considers the case of Wu Jialin’s photographic art,from the creation process to the style to the value of his photographic works,and to trace how his photographic concept of "impromptu capture,artistic record" gradually came into being,developed,matured and became his style characteristics.On the other hand,the formation of his artistic style witnessed the photographic transition,from a tool of political propaganda to an independent localized art category.Based on a comprehensive exploration of Wu Jialin’s photographic art,the author combined her own creative practice to state the significance of Wu Jialin’s documentary photography. |
