A Contrastive Study Of Refusals Strategies And Influencing Factors Between Chinese And Vietnamese

Refusal is a speech act often encountered in daily communication,and it is also one of the speech acts that makes communication fail.If the refusal speech act is not well implemented,it will often affect the relationship between the two sides.Therefore,the refusals will choose a variety of refusals strategies to reduce the face threat of the requester.Due to the different ways of thinking and cultural background,the Chinese and Vietnamese people adopt different ways and Strategies of refusal.Therefore,it is easy for Chinese and Vietnamese to misuse incorrect refusal strategies due to cultural differences,resulting in misunderstanding and contradiction between the two sides.This paper uses speech act theory,politeness principle,cooperative principle and face theory as the theoretical framework,and combines with previous research results.Taking the corpus collected from Chinese and Vietnamese film and TV plays as the research object,this paper studies the definition,classification and characteristics of refusal speech act in Chinese and Vietnamese by the methods of summary,comparison and data analysis.This paper summarizes the pragmatic strategies of Chinese and Vietnamese refusal language through the corpus of film and television script,and analyzes the factors influencing the refusal strategy through the corpus,and summarizes the similarities and characteristics of the refusal speech acts of the two countries.I hope to make some contribution to the study of daily communication between China and Vietnam.The study found that commonly used Chinese and Vietnamese rejection strategies include 1direct rejection strategy and 17 indirect rejection strategies.Both China and Vietnam tend to use indirect rejection strategies,which are mainly concentrated in four categories: "explaining strategies","excusing strategies","criticizing education strategies",and "rhetorically asking strategies".The indirect strategies of Chinese and Vietnamese can not only express implicit and euphemistic refusal,but also maintain each other’s face.The rhetorical question strategy,critical education strategy and warning strategy in indirect refusal are relatively strong,which may threaten the other party’s face and violate the politeness principleThis research also further explores the influence of social factors on the use of Chinese and Vietnamese language refusal from three aspects: social status,social distance and gender differences.The study found that under the influence of social status in China and Vietnam,the higher the status of the requester,the more polite the rejecter.And under the influence of social distance,the farther the distance is,the more tactful and polite the rejecters rejection strategy.But the impact of social distancing on the Chinese is more significant than that of the Vietnamese.The influence of gender factors is mainly reflected in the fact that Chinese men and Vietnamese men tend to use "direct rejection strategies" and "reason strategies",while Chinese women and Vietnamese women tend to use "direct rejection strategies" and "excuses strategies".
