This report is based on the translation of the first and second chapters of the book Twisted Tree.The source text is a suspense novel with complex characters and an intricate and logical plot.In the process of translation,the translator notices the great amount of description in the text,especially the description of characters and environment,which promotes the change and development of the plot and creates the suspense atmosphere.Therefore,the translator should take it seriously in the process of translation.Character portrayal and environmental description are commonly used to construct the plot,enrich character images and promote the development of the plot in literary works.However,in suspense novels,they carry the unique significance of creating the suspense atmosphere.To recreate the suspense atmosphere of the source text for the target readers,the translator needs to correctly understand and properly deal with the character portrayal and environmental description in the translation process.Under the guidance of the narratology and correlation theory,based on the translation practice of the selected texts,the translator endeavors to figure out the ways to recreate the suspense atmosphere in the target text through character portrayal and environmental description.Then,the translator chooses domestication as the main translation strategy and foreignization as its supplement.What’s more,based on the variety of description subjects,the translator chooses free translation,variation translation and other translation methods,coupled with different translation skills such as addition and shift.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained a certain understanding of the ways to recreate suspense atmosphere through character portrayal and environmental description in the translation of suspense novels.This practice has also provided the translator with some experience in translating suspense novels.The translator sincerely hopes to provide a new perspective for future translation practice of suspense novels. |
