| The importance of creativity to the development of individuals, nations and counties is self-evident.With the in-depth study of creativity, researchers are more and more aware that creativity is a multi-dimensional structure influenced by internal and external factors. As a relatively stable internal characteristic of individuals, the need for cognitive closure can affect the way and process of individual information processing.Exploring the relationship between need for cognitive closure and creativity will help researchers to understand the influence mechanism of motivation on creativity from a new perspective. The second-generation of cognitive science points out that the combination of body and mind plays an important role in individual cognition. The theory of embodied cognition emphasizes that cognition is embodied, the body should return to cognition, and the cognitive process is a combination of embodied mind and disembodied mind.On the basis of embodied cognitive theory, this study introduces embodied characteristics as external factors to explore whether different external physical states can lead to differences in individual creative performance. Therefore, this study finally aims to explore the complex mechanism of creativity by combining the internal and external factors of the need for cognitive closure and embodied characteristics. In study 1,465 college students were investigated by using "Need For Closure Scale" 、 "Williams Creative Personality Tendency Question" and "Test of Creative Thinking in Typical Behavior" to explore the relationship between the need for cognitive closure and creativity.Study 2 explored the effect of need for cognitive closure on individual creativity through experimental methods, and analyze the influence of embodied characteristics and their interaction on the creative performance.First, the study conducted a field test on 60 college students through a pre-experiment,and determined the final questions of convergent thinking task. The formal experiment adopted a two-factor design of 2(need for cognitive closure:high/low)×3(embodied characteristics:walking/standing/sitting).The subjects were 132 freshmen. The dependent variables were the scores of Alternative Use Test and Chinese Remote Association Test. The results are summarized as follows:1.On the whole, the need for cognitive closure are significantly negatively correlated with creative tendency, and positively correlated with creative thinking ability.2.The need for cognitive closure affects individual creative performance.Individuals low on the need for cognitive closure whose divergent thinking performance are significantly better than those high on the need for cognitive closure, while the performance of convergent thinking is significantly lower than those high on the need for cognitive closure.3.Embodied characteristics have a significant impact on individual creativity.Individuals’ creative performance is different under different states. The bodily state of walking promotes individuals’ performance of fluency, flexibility and the total score of divergent thinking. While in the standing state, the convergent thinking performance is significantly better than that in the walking and sitting state.4.There is a significant interaction effect of embodied characteristics and need for cognitive closure. For individuals high on the need for cognitive closure, the walking state promotes their divergent thinking performance and hinders their convergent thinking performance. However, the convergent thinking performance of low need for cognitive closure in standing is significantly better than that in walking and sitting states, but their divergent thinking performance was not affected by bodily state. |
