Prefabricated chunks are an essential part in language learning. The research on prefabricated chunks at home and abroad mainly focuses on its definition, classification and functional explorations. In interpreting field, most scholars focus on simultaneous interpreting, while the research of prefabricated chunks in consecutive interpreting is relatively less. Therefore, this thesis attempts to combine prefabricated chunks with consecutive interpreting to explore the multidimensional effects on the output of student interpreters in the process of C-E Consecutive Interpreting, which is one of the findings of this thesis. This thesis introduces the definition, classification and function of prefabricated chunks,as well as the relevant research and literature in the field of interpreting by scholars at home and abroad. The following research questions are raised: 1.In what dimensions will the application of prefabricated chunks affect the quality of C-E consecutive interpretation of student interpreters and what is the specific performance?2.Does the application of prefabricated chunks alleviate the cognitive load of student interpreters in the process of C-E consecutive interpreting? Based on the research of relevant theories, the author makes the following hypotheses: 1.The application of prefabricated chunks will improve the fidelity, expression level and language accuracy of the output of student interpreters in C-E consecutive interpreting,so as to improve the interpretation quality.2.The application of prefabricated chunks helps relieve the listening and note-taking load of student interpreters and expands their short-term memory capacity. In this thesis, the experimental method and questionnaire survey are used for empirical research and the questionnaire survey works as a supplement. The experimental data is analyzed by SPSS statistical software. The subjects are 14 students majoring in English interpreting. The experimenters are divided into Experimental Group and Control Group, and the Experimental Group members are trained to recite prefabricated chunks for one month. After that, the two groups are tested by Chinese-English consecutive interpreting simultaneously. The experimental results show that the primary training method of memorization is helpful to improve student interpreters’ mastery of prefabricated chunks, but it is not flexible enough. And the quantitative analysis results show that: 1.The number of prefabricated chunks has a significant positive correlation with student interpreters’ fidelity, and the Pearson correlation intensity is medium to high. The correlations with the number of misinterpretations,over-interpretations and pretermissions are shown respectively:significant negative correlation between medium and high intensity,no significant correlation, significant negative correlation between medium and high intensity.2.There is a significant positive correlation between the number of prefabricated chunks and student interpreters’ expression level, and the correlations between the number of prefabricated chunks and the times of pause, repetition and repair as well as logical confusion are shown respectively: significant negative correlation of medium intensity;no significant negative correlation of medium intensity;no significant correlation.3.The number of prefabricated chunks is negatively and weakly correlated with the student interpreters’ overall language accuracy. The results of qualitative analysis show that the application of prefabricated chunks can reduce the non-fluency,information redundancy and other errors in C-E consecutive interpreting. The results of the questionnaire are in line with the hypothesis. To sum up,the application of prefabricated chunks can effectively alleviate student interpreters’ cognitive load in C-E consecutive interpreting and can significantly improve their target language fidelity and expression level, but has little impact on the language accuracy. Therefore, student interpreters should strengthen the awareness of PCs input, accumulate different types of PCs and take the initiative to recite relevant materials and take timely exercise.Simultaneously, student interpreters should also pay attention to grammar learning and strengthen their basic language skills to improve the accuracy of interpretation. |
