As a temporary translation unit selected by translators according to specific context, event can connect syntactic and semantic planes and better realize the transformation between languages.Previous studies have mainly focused on application of event theory in Chinese-English translation. This paper explores the feasibility and strategies of using event as the operative unit in English-Chinese translation by examples in The Outsider. In translation,by analyzing the semantic meaning of original text, the translator can find key information to clarify the relationship and configuration of event components. The changes of and between components can lead to the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic adjustment, achieving the logicality and fluency of expressions in target language. The analysis of translation examples of this novel focuses on verbs and semantic roles of the event. As the core component of an event, verb directly affects the prototypicality of event. In the transformation from supposedly more static English to supposedly more dynamic Chinese, the changes of verbs can affect eventuality in the source text. Some static components in the event can be replaced by dynamic verbs. The degrading and upgrading of semantic roles help readjust the sentence structure of event. In sum,the method of eventualization can effectively galvanize the transformation from the original text to the target text, and then conduce the reader’s reading experience.
