With the development of the multimedia teaching approach as well as the requirement of New Curriculum reform,English listening teaching is improved in senior high school.As a quite useful teaching resource,English movies are widely used because students can be put into real situation.However,movie teaching has not been widely used in Chinese senior high school.Thus,the present study aims at exploring the effects of English and Chinese movies subtitles on senior high school students’ English listening performance and listening anxiety.The study is based on the Input Theory and Schema Theory.Sixty students in Grade 1 of Wushan senior high school were selected as the research subjects.At the beginning of the experiment,the participants were divided into high level students and low level students according to the scores of pre-test.Then,they were asked to finish the Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Scale.After that,participants were divided into English subtitle group and Chinese subtitle group.The Chinese subtitle group chose English movies with Chinese subtitles for listening teaching,and the English subtitle group chose English movies with English subtitles for listening teaching.The high level students of English subtitle group is group 1;the low-level students of English subtitle is group 2;the high level students of Chinese subtitle group is group 3;the low level students of Chinese subtitle group is group 4.When the experiment finished,the participants took the post-test and finished the Foreign Language Listening Anxiety Scale.In addition,8 participants were randomly selected to participate in the interview.After all the data were collected,it was analyzed by SPSS 24.0.The findings of this study are as following: Firstly,applying Chinese and English movie subtitles is helpful for multi-level students in improving their English listening performance,and compared with Chinese subtitle,English subtitle contributed more to students’ listening performance.In addition,the low level students made greater progress in English listening performance than high level students.Secondly,English listening anxiety exists among the different-level students,and there is a significant negative correlation between the level of listening performance and listening anxiety.Applying Chinese and English movie subtitles is helpful for different-level students in decreasing their English listening anxiety,and the English subtitle made greater progress in reducing English listening anxiety than Chinese subtitle.In addition,the low level students made greater progress in reducing English listening anxiety than high level students.
