| Because of differences on aesthetics, ways of expression and thinking between Chinese and English as well as the divergences in writing styles of tourism texts in the two languages, there exist many problems such as redundancy, repetition, loose structure, incoherence and implicit culture in the conversion.Based on the C-E translation task — Scenery of Tianzhu With Its Primitive Beauty, under the guidance of translation variation theory put forward by Huang Zhonglian, the translator adopts techniques of addition, deletion, edition, narration, condensation, integration and alteration to make adaptations in translation. The aim is to explore the applicability of translation variation theory in the process and find out what, why and how to make adaptations.Based on the linguistic differences and disparities between Chinese and English tourism texts, the translator analyzes tourism texts in the two languages from the dimensions of lexical feature, syntactic feature and discourse structure and then is clear about what to be adapted.Firstly, the beautiful writing style of the Chinese tourism text should be changed into simple writing style in English.Secondly, the ornate expressions, three and four-character idioms, poems and folk songs as well as the writer’s feelings, opinion and comment should be adapted into words describing the scenery and giving the information about the scenic spots.Thirdly, the connotations of culture-loaded words should be conveyed to the target readers through explanation. Finally, the loosely organized discourse structure of the source text should be adapted in the conversion.By doing so,the translator can show the unique Tibetan culture and original ecological scenery to the target readers for maximum effect. It is proved by practice that translation variation theory is suitable for guiding C-E translation of tourism materials. The conclusion is:1.Addition helps explicate the connotations of culture-loaded words;2.Deletion can be used to translate the repeated and redundant information;3.Deletion and condensation are adopted to translate the irrelevant content;4.Edition and narration are suitable for adapting the discourse structure;5.Integration and alteration help reorganize the loose structure. However, there are many factors that affect the content, the reasons and methods of adaptations, such as the translator’s language command, practice level, thinking ability and so on.Therefore, the application of translation variation theory to C-E translation of tourism texts is of great subjectivity, and further research is needed if systematic adaptation rules are to be set. |
