A Report On E-C Translation Of Sandan: An Adventure In Creative Education (Chapter Ⅷ)

Documentary literature is a new literary genre which can reflect the real life.It is featured with authenticity and reality.Because documentary literature can reflect social reality,the translation of documentary texts occupies a place in the translation field.This report is based on an English-Chinese translation task related to the works of Rewi Alley.The task is undertaken by the translator during her internship in the Gansu Cultural Translation and Interpreting Center,with a total translation volume about80,000 words.The eighth chapter of the documentary literature Sandan: an Adventure in Creative Education is selected as the practical material of this time.This part mainly introduces the difficult course of Rewi Alley’s establishment of the Bailie Vocational Institution in Sandan and the establishment of a number of training sections.During the visit to Bailie Vocational Institution in Sandan,on August 20,2019,General Secretary Xi Jinping said the development of vocational education would enjoy a brilliant future.The purpose of choosing this part of translation is to encourage more people to carry forward Mr.Rewi Alley’s school-running ideas of using hands and brains to create and analyze,and to guide all sectors of society to actively implement the vocational education mentioned by General Secretary Xi Jinping,and strive to build a vocational education system with Chinese characteristics.The loss of function,form and even meaning is always inevitable during the translation,so the translator chooses the translation compensation as the guiding theory of this report.Compensation means the translator takes the target language as the main device and then applies other language devices in accordance with the target language conventions or norms to repair or compensate for the possible or existing losses in the process on account of text types and the translation purpose.By expounding the necessity,principles and techniques of compensation,the translator further illustrates the applicability of translation compensation theory to the practice.As documentary literature focuses on reality,the compensation of the source text centers on the content rather than the form.To ensure the successful completion of the practice,the translator makes a lot of preparations.Before the translation,the translator searches for the information of the task,analyzes characteristics of the source text and makes a plan of the translation according to the entrusting party’s requirements.During the translation,the translator takes the translation compensation as the guiding theory of this report,systematically analyzes the application of translation compensation techniques,such as extension,division,amplification and conversion in the practice of the documentary text according to three linguistic levels:morphology,syntax and discourse.Finally,the translator sums up the experience of the practice,makes related reflections and puts forward the expectation for the future translation study and work.
