| Vocabulary presentation method has been widely concerned by scholars at home and abroad in recent years.Multimedia vocabulary presentation mode is being well received by the front-line English teachers owing to its unique features,vivid and interesting.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the effect of different multimedia vocabulary presentation methods on the short-term memory and long-term memory of English vocabulary.Based on information processing theory,cognitive load theory and dual coding theory,this paper compares the effects of three different types of vocabulary presentation mode on vocabulary memory which include the text,text plus picture and text plus video presentation mode.The subjects are selected from three parallel classes in senior one of Yichun Middle School.After the corresponding multimedia vocabulary presentation,the students of the three classes must complete an immediate vocabulary test at once followed by a delayed posttest a week later.The content of the two tests is the same,but the order of the target words is different.The research specifically answered the following three questions:(1)Among the three types of multimedia presentation modes,which one produces the best retention of the target words in the immediate test by senior high school students?(2)Among the three types of multimedia presentation modes,which one produces the best retention of the target words in the delayed test by senior high school students?(3)Compared with the result of the immediate vocabulary test,do the three different multimedia vocabulary presentation modes have different effects on the delayed vocabulary test performance?After the experiment,all the data collected were analyzed by SPSS 21.0.The results indicate that,first of all,no notable difference was found among the three multimedia vocabulary presentation modes in the immediate vocabulary test.Secondly,in the delayed test,the long-term memory effects of text plus image and text plus video presentation modes were significantly better than that of text presentation mode.But there was no statistically significant difference between the first two multimedia vocabulary presentation modes.Finally,all subjects performed better in the immediate vocabulary test than in the delayed vocabulary test among all the three different multimedia vocabulary presentation methods.In terms of the impact of the three different multimedia presentation modes on vocabulary retention,the text plus picture presentation mode was the best,the text plus video presentation mode was in the middle,and the text presentation mode being the least effective.In accordance with the experimental results,the author puts forward some suggestions on English vocabulary teaching for senior high school teachers in China.For example,in the examination review stage,teachers can use the text presentation mode to help students review English vocabulary;teachers should take the presentation mode of text plus picture as the top choice,and the text plus video presentation mode as a supplement when they design the vocabulary teaching courseware;The teacher should help the students review the words that they have learned in time. |
