The issue of the students with English learning difficulties has been troubling many teachers.How to transform the students with English learning difficulties has become a thorny problem.Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory(MI theory)holds that human intelligence is multiple,each person has at least eight different intelligences,and there are only different fields among them.The theory asks teachers to treat each student equally from different perspectives and levels and pay attention to the individual differences among students,which is consistent with the concept of quality education in our country and also provides a good path for the new curriculum reform in China.This paper,considering the MI theory as theoretical basis,applies the MI theory to English teaching and adopts effective teaching methods to transform different intelligence types of students with learning difficulties.This study mainly solves the following three research questions:Question1.What influence does the application of MI theory to English teaching have on the learning interest of junior high school students with learning difficulties?Question2.What impacts could the application of MI theory to English teaching have on the autonomous learning habits of junior middle school students with English learning difficulties?Question3.What effect does the application of MI theory to English teaching have on the English scores of junior middle school students with English learning difficulties?This teaching experiment is conducted in Gaizhou Yingcai School in Liaoning Province,from September 2,2020 to January 6,2021,lasting about four months.The participants of the study are two parallel classes with learning difficulties.And then the author selects Class3 Grade 8 as the experimental class randomly,and Class 4 Grade 8 is chose as the control class.In the experimental class,the author adopts the English teaching mode based on MI theory,and designs diversified teaching activities to stimulate the learning interest of the students with English learning difficulties,develop good learning habits and improve their English scores,while the control class still uses the traditional teaching mode.Qualitative and quantitative data are collected through questionnaires,tests,interviews and classroom observation.Through the analysis of the data before and after the experiment,finally it is proved that applying MI theory to English teaching is effective to transform students with learning difficulties.All experimental data is measured and analyzed by SPSS.Data analysis shows that applying MI theory to English teaching and designing a variety of teaching activities according to the different superior intelligences of the students with learning difficulties,which promotes the transfer of superior intelligences of the students with learning difficulties to other fields of intelligence,stimulates their interest in learning,helps to form good learning habits,improve their English scores,and successfully complete the transformation of students with English learning difficulties.However,there are some difficulties and limitations in the research process.The effectiveness of the transformation of the students with learning difficulties based on MI theory needs to be further verified by relevant research.
